Introduction to Automotive Skills

Mara Automotive Training offer a 13-week programme aimed at those who are registered with Work & Income. This course has been designed to give the participant an introduction to some of the skills that would be useful in an automotive workshop or an allied industry.

  • Duration: 13 weeks.
  • Location: Palmerston North.
  • Credits: The total credits available for this course is 26. To achieve this the participant will need to complete 2 credits per week.
  • Pre-requisite: Referral through Work & Income.

The course is Unit Standard based and all credits gained will be loaded onto the NZQA website under your personal NSI number.

Course Outline

  • Safety in the workplace
  • Manage own Learning Program
  • Demonstrate Good Work Habits
  • Prepare a vehicle for use
  • Balance wheels on a vehicle
  • Remove and Replace wheels
  • Bleed Brakes on a Vehicle
  • Demonstrate Knowledge of Brake fluid
  • Knowledge of MIG Welding
  • Use a MIG welder in the motor industry

There are Theory units on the practical application of Safety in the Workplace to OSH standards.

During this course, the participant will be able to Plan and Monitor their work progress using a unit standard designed for this purpose. This unit is NZQA recognised.

Training for Work

The unit standards selected will give the participant basic skills in:

  • The checking of a vehicle or machine for use, this includes checking fluids, wheels, lights and safety features to see if they are safe for use and they function correctly.
  • The correct procedure for jacking up a vehicle, removal and installation of road wheels in a safe manner to prevent damage to the vehicle and components.
  • A basic knowledge of Brake Fluid and the reason for regular fluid changes as well as how to Bleed the brake system.
  • Practical skills and the theory of MIG Welding to Unit Standard level.
  • There is an optional unit available on the Repair and Replacement of basic exhaust systems.
